The intermediate student will have mastered the basic open shapes and be able to play single note riffs. They will be taught a full understanding of barre shapes, improvisation techniques and all the basic scales. The styles of playing the guitar are quite varied and at this stage there may be some personal preferences as to the focus of the lessons. Some may want to focus on band skills, others fingerpicking or improvisation. Whilst at an intermediate level a lot of skills are universal, it is still important at this stage to start tailoring the lesson for the individuals taste. Do they aspire to be the next Jimi Hendrix? Wes Montgomery? Merle Travis? Nile Rodgers? BB King? I recognise this and make sure the student is heading where they want to go. At this stage I also offer to teach any song the student would like to learn, as well as offering a choice of hundreds of songs I have already prepared.
